Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley shocked the world with the news of their brief romance in the mid-1990s.
The King of Pop and the daughter of Elvis Presley briefly met in the 1970s at a concert in Las Vegas but did not get to know each other until nearly two decades later. In her posthumously released memoir, From Here to the Great Unknown, Lisa Marie recalled reuniting with Jackson after she recorded her first demo.
Jackson and Lisa Marie quickly became friends and often talked on the phone, but their relationship did not progress beyond that right away. “I thought he was lonely and needed a friend. But he was pursuing me,” she wrote.
In 1994, Jackson professed his love for Lisa Marie. “By then, I felt I was in love with him too,” she recalled in the book.
At the time, Lisa Marie was married to Danny Keough — with whom she shares two kids, Riley and the late Benjamin — but they divorced so she could move on with Jackson. Weeks after their split, Lisa Marie and Jackson wed in a low-key ceremony in the Dominican Republic.
Jackson’s addiction struggles started to throw a wrench in their relationship, leading to the end of their marriage. Their divorce was finalized in 1996.
