Liverpool have paid tribute to supporter Philip Dooley, who died in a road traffic accident in Bergamo on Tuesday morning.

Dooley, 51, had travelled to Italy for Liverpool’s Champions League match against AC Milan, with the city of Bergamo around an hour’s journey north of Milan.

Merseyside Police have confirmed they are assisting Italian authorities following the incident.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic passing of our supporter Philip Dooley, following a road traffic accident in Bergamo in the early hours of this morning,” a Liverpool statement on Tuesday evening read.

“Philip was a lifelong Liverpool fan who had travelled to Italy to be at tonight’s Champions League game against AC Milan.

“Our staff in Milan are working with the local police and consulate, and continue to provide support to other fans impacted by this devastating incident.

“The thoughts and prayers of everyone connected to the club are with Philip’s family, friends and fellow supporters at this extremely difficult time. Rest in peace, Philip.”

Arne Slot’s side start their Champions League campaign against Milan on Tuesday, three days after their perfect start to the Premier League season came to an end with defeat at home to Nottingham Forest on Saturday.
