Liverpool have added former Manchester City analyst and coach Aaron Briggs to Arne Slot’s backroom staff.

The 37-year-old is the club’s new elite development coach — filling the role vacated by Vitor Matos at the end of last season.

Briggs, who will be the key link between the academy and the first-team set-up, had been pursued by a number of Premier League clubs this summer.

He was assistant coach at German club Wolfsburg under Niko Kovac prior to their departure from the club in March.

Briggs worked at Monaco as tactical analysis coach, assistant coach and then head of football methodology between 2020 and 2022.

He also spent nine years at Manchester City where he rose up the ranks from Under-18 performance analyst to senior first team performance analyst having previously been on the staff at Blackpool and Preston North End.

Briggs is the fourth addition to Slot’s staff after Spike Hulshoff (assistant coach), Ruben Peeters (lead physical performance coach) and Fabian Otte (goalkeeping coach).

Liverpool are still in the process of recruiting a first-team coach. Former Everton and Netherlands defender Johnny Heitinga is one of the names currently under consideration. Heitinga was part of David Moyes’ staff at West Ham but left the London club when the Scotsman’s reign ended in May.
