Tom Thibodeau is staying in New York for the long haul, as the Knicks reached a contract extension with their coach Wednesday, a league source confirmed. News of the extension was first reported by ESPN.

Thibodeau just completed his fourth season with the Knicks, who reached the 50-win mark for the first time since 2012-13. In his four years, the Knicks have gone 175-143 and made the playoffs three times. His .550 winning percentage ranks sixth in franchise history among coaches who lasted more than one season.

The team has reached the Eastern Conference semifinals in each of the last two seasons, marking the first time the Knicks have advanced past the first round in back-to-back seasons since 1998-99 and 1999-00.

Thibodeau, 66, is a two-time Coach of the Year winner, first in 2011 with the Chicago Bulls and again in 2021 with the Knicks. His defensive acumen has meshed well with New York’s roster, which was significantly boosted this offseason with the addition of Mikal Bridges, a former All-Defensive First Team selection.

Prior to the Knicks, Thibodeau coached Chicago for five years and the Minnesota Timberwolves for parts of three years. He won an NBA title as an assistant coach with the Boston Celtics in 2008.
