Democrats are growing nervous about Kamala Harris’s prospects in the upcoming election, and when one looks at their candidate’s recent performances, one can hardly blame them. The Harris/Walz campaign has gone from dumpster fire to train wreck, and things aren’t improving. More and more it’s looking like one of the best things the Trump/Vance ticket could do is just to let their opponent keep campaigning.

But the Democrats aren’t hitting on what their real problem is: Their candidate, who my friend and colleague Jeff Charles refers to as “Black Hillary,” is the worst presidential candidate since Her Imperial Majesty Hillary I, Dowager-Empress of Chappaqua. And, ironically, both of these awful candidates are facing the same Republican opponent. Democrats are instead worried about the Harris ticket’s having “peaked too soon.”

Democrats are worried the initial euphoria of Vice President Kamala Harris ascending to the top of the ticket this summer has fizzled out at the worst possible time.

As Harris took the stage in battleground state Arizona on Thursday for the second time in two weeks, she immediately called herself the “underdog.” It’s a word she has used often to motivate voters. This time, however, Democrats fear the sentiment reflects an uncomfortable reality that she is behind.

“Arizona, look, we have just 26 days until Election Day, 26 days. And we are nearing the home stretch, and this will be a tight race until the very end, and we are the underdog,” Harris said, with the crowd responding by barking like dogs.

“So, we have some hard work ahead of us, but we like hard work. Hard work is good work,” Harris said.

Bear in mind that Kamala Harris wouldn’t know hard work from a pastrami and sauerkraut sandwich on pumpernickel; the woman has never done an honest day’s work. But that’s not the important point; the main thing Democrats are missing is that they picked a horrible candidate, and that horrible candidate picked an even worse running mate in Tim “Great Walz of China.”

But look at the clueless language in that quote just above. Yes, it is looking like a tight race, but the momentum is becoming clear, and it’s not with the Harris/Walz ticket. The momentum is with the Trump/Vance team, and as of this writing, the RealClearPolitics averages of the battleground states have Trump leading in all but one, Wisconsin, where Harris holds a razor-thin 0.3 point lead — a statistical tie. Bear in mind that the Harris ticket was leading in most of these states through September — but not any longer, and all the phony interviews, all the media tongue-baths, and all the fawning magazine covers can’t make up for the fact that Kamala Harris is just a terrible candidate.

The Democrats are right to be nervous; it’s just that most of them are wrong about the reason. One Democratic operative, who spoke on the condition of anonymity (for which we can hardly blame him), seems to have it closer to the mark:

“Before this week, Harris had been able to distance herself from all the things that have gone wrong in the Biden administration: chaos in the Middle East, the border, and even all this recent misinformation going around about FEMA and the hurricane recovery funding,” one Democratic operative granted anonymity to speak candidly about the campaign said.

“Unfortunately, that changed when she was unable to give concrete examples of how a Harris administration would be different in these interviews, and it completely undermines her ‘A New Way Forward’ strategy,” the person said.

Closer, but not quite. This operative, at least, seems to understand that Kamala Harris’s inability to give any examples of, well, anything, hurts her. But as far as this “New Way Forward” strategy, the obvious question is “What strategy?” Kamala Harris has never articulated any coherent platform; part of that is that she doesn’t have one, and part of it is because she doesn’t know what any such platform should be. She can’t answer the most basic questions about her plans should she win; and as we saw recently, if she loses her teleprompter, she vapor-locks.

Honestly, at this point in the campaign, any candidate should have a basic stump speech memorized and should be able to deliver it at a moment’s notice. Kamala can’t do that.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: Kamala Harris is an awful candidate, not because of her plumbing or her skin color. She is an awful candidate because she has never really been accountable for anything in her career; she has failed upwards since the very beginning; she’s an absolutely horrible retail politician. Frankly, she’s not very bright, and it’s really beginning to look like she’s going to lose this election.
