Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) is, to put it as politely as possible, a real piece of… work. He’s never seen a tax he wasn’t in favor of; he defines “bipartisanship” as “Republicans do what I tell them to, and nothing more,” and now he’s about to shut the government down, or at least give it his best old college try. Because shutting the government down is only bad when Republicans do it.

Pass the House’s Continuing Resolution—Then Make the Real Cuts Count in Reconciliation
Sen. Schumer spoke (and, yes, I listened to him, so you don’t have to) on the Senate floor on Wednesday about the House passing the CR:
Funding the government should be a bipartisan effort. But Republicans chose a partisan path, drafting their continuing resolution without any input, any input, from Congressional Democrats. Because of that, Republicans do not have the votes in the Senate to invoke cloture on the House CR. Our caucus is unified on a clean April 11 CR that will keep the government open and give Congress time to negotiate bipartisan legislation that can pass. We should vote on that. I hope, I hope, our Republican colleagues will join us to avoid a shutdown on Friday.
Senator Markwayne Mullin (R-OK), following Schumer’s outpouring, took to X to explain how the CR differs from a budget or a reconciliation package; it’s worth the watch.
Senate Democrats have a decision to make. Will it be a Schumer Shutdown? pic.twitter.com/C6Rftq6MCC

Senator Mullin said in part:
So, I want to kind of give you an update of what’s going on with the CR in the process. I know this is wonky, but I need to explain to you what’s happening. CR is completely different than the budget, which is completely different than the reconciliation. Now what is the CR? The CR is about FY 25, meaning this is leftovers from the Biden administration. FY 25 really started October 1st. But we can’t start the DOGE cuts and take the priorities of the President of the United States in FY25, we have to start doing that in FY26, which also ends September 30th. So we’re going to cut the umbilical cord with FY25, stop the process of having to try to fix what the Biden administration messed up with their appropriations, and start putting permanent fixes in moving forward.
There’s more, with Mullin breaking down the math, and the process on the Senate side, but those are the broad strokes. As he says, “If the Democrats choose not to vote for this, then they’re essentially going to shut down the government…Schumer will be the one who makes this decision.”

What Donald Trump Said About Chuck Schumer Will Have MSNBC Spontaneously Combusting
Back to Senator Schumer. His remarks take a bit of unpacking.
First, deriding the Republicans for “taking a partisan path.” Seriously, Senator? There is no one in Washington more openly, more nakedly partisan than Chuck Schumer. The one thing I will give him is that he keeps his caucus in line; they are, as he said, united. That’s not surprising; collectivism is in their nature, and Democrats rarely seem to require the cat-herding skills that the more independent Republican caucus requires of their leaders.
Second, the senator calls for bipartisan legislation. The only time Chuck Schumer is interested in bipartisan legislation is when the Democrats are in the minority. Otherwise, it’s “majority rules” all the way, and as noted, he defines “bipartisanship” as “Republicans do what I tell them.” He defines “negotiation” and “compromise” as synonyms, meaning “We (Democrats) get everything we want, and Republicans get doodley-squat.”
Chuck Schumer is, in short, one of the biggest hypocrites in Washington, in the government, and in the Democratic Party, and as you surely know, he’s up against some pretty stiff competition.
So, fine. If the Democrats block the CR and the government goes into partial shutdown, make the Dems own it. Proclaim it the “Schumer Shutdown” and shout that from the rooftops. The Democrats made that the rule, so we’ll play it their way. And for all the rooftop shouters the Dems have, we’ve got one better – President Trump.
