Inside Halle Berry’s Houses in California

Although she’s one of the most famous women in the world, not much is known about Halle Berry’s houses over the years. Berry has been a household name since 1992 thanks to her breakout role in the romantic comedy Boomerang. The actor went on to become the first African American woman to win the Oscar for best actress in 2002 for her role in Monster’s Ball, and since then she has acquired over 30 awards including a Golden Globe and an Emmy. Her most recent film, Never Let Go, premiered in September.

Throughout her rise to fame, Berry has maintained an air of mystery around where she lives. Even her current primary place of residency is unknown. What we do know is that the actor has owned two properties in California, one in the Hollywood Hills and one in Malibu. Read on as we share a glimpse of the award-winning actor’s two known-about homes.

Mediterranean-style villa

Like many actors in the spotlight, Berry called the Hollywood Hills home for nearly a decade. The actor purchased a 4,300-square-foot, three-bedroom, 2.5-bathroom villa there in 1994. The Mediterranean-style home sat on a third of an acre, offering both privacy and expansive views of Los Angeles and the canyon. The home was a true Tuscan-inspired oasis with a tranquil backyard that featured a flagstone patio, asymmetric turquoise pool, traditional Italian loggia, and spa. Berry eventually sold the property in 2006 for $4.15 million.

Contemporary Malibu retreat

Berry purchased a waterfront property in Malibu in 2004 for $8.5 million. The 5,083-square-foot contemporary beach house featured three bedrooms and five bathrooms. It’s obvious why the Academy Award–winning actor gravitated towards the home—the curved white façade boasted 60 feet of uninterrupted Pacific Ocean views and access. The actor once told WSJ, “I’ve always loved the ocean. My home sits on a beach but it feels very private because it’s at the end of the cul-de-sac, so there were never any crowds.” The residence is located in the guard-gated Malibu Cove Colony neighborhood.

In order not to compete with the floor-to-ceiling windows offering views of the ocean, Berry opted for a calm, neutral color palette. The home also offered large skylights, high ceilings, an open floor plan, and an upstairs loft that the actor used as an office. Berry lived in the home, amongst the ocean views, year-round in 2004 when she starred in Catwoman, according to WSJ. She then primarily used it as a weekend retreat, per WSJ, until listing the home in 2023 for $18 million, before taking it back off the market.
