These pages are ripe with tradition reinvented: Global features director Sam Cochran profiles the brilliant architects who have been selected by the venerable Metropolitan Museum of Art to spearhead updates to its hallowed galleries. We visit a notable 1970s house on Lake Michigan, which architectural consultant Mark Johnson and designer Lily Dierkes have sensitively renovated for a modern young family. In Malibu, artist Jorge Pardo has dramatically transformed an old ranch house into a living artwork for publisher Benedikt Taschen.

Finally, I especially loved the revealing peek beyond the basketball court and into the personal environment of our cover star, NBA sensation Jimmy Butler. A renaissance man whose passions include fine wine, sand volleyball, international travel, coffee, and dominoes, Butler created his dream retreat in Southern California with an assist from AD100 designer Tiffany Brooks. Butler tells AD senior features editor Nick Mafi, “I continually grow, I continually learn—and I want to leave room for that in this house.” A six-time All-Star, still reinventing.

Amy Astley’s editor’s letter appears in AD’s November 2024 issue. Never miss an issue when you subscribe to AD.
