In Colombia river guardians fight to protect river polluted by illegal gold mining

Colombia’s Atrato River is deemed so important that in 2026 a Colombian court said it has the same rights as a human being. But illegal gold mining, which for the past decade has been the fastest growing criminal economy, has deforested the land and poisoned the river. Locals have been taking on the roles of river guardians, trying to work with government institutions to protect the river. (AP video shot by: Marko Alvarez).
