World leaders seem to be flocking in ever-greater numbers to Mar-a-Lago, otherwise known in some circles as the South White House, to visit the President-elect (Acting President?) Donald Trump. We can scarcely blame them; they are going to be dealing with Trump 2, the Return of Trump for the next four years, and they all know it.
And to be honest, some of them have to be more than a little relieved; at least the new American president they will be dealing with will be fully conscious and capable, as opposed to drooling into a pudding cup.
The latest leader to head for Mar-a-Lago is the effervescent, yet forceful Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. The prime minister seems more capable and confident than the general run of leaders most of Europe has produced lately (not that this is setting the bar very high), and she seems to be on good terms with Donald Trump, at least based on photographic evidence.

While it is yet unknown what the Italian PM and the president-elect discussed on Saturday, we can be sure that Ms. Meloni probably found Donald Trump less bothersome to deal with than his predecessor. PM Meloni’s eye-rolls are legendary; check out this one, when she was awaiting a tardy Joe Biden’s arrival at a NATO summit:

And again, when meeting French President Emmanuel Macron; this one is particularly fun to watch because the eye-roll is minimized, but she combines it with that half-smile and slightly inclined head:

She’s great. What’s really amazing is how few of her fellow European leaders seem to be able to digest these visual cues she is so liberally dispensing.
But while the president-elect seems to be on good terms with Ms. Meloni, Trump’s new advisor and confidante Elon Musk seems to be striking a much more personal connection with the Italian prime minister. In fact, they seem to be downright… chummy. People on X had fun speculating that Musk might be a surprise guest at Mar-a-Lago, by sharing older photos with him and Meloni :

I can remember back when my wife and I were courting, when she would look at me like that. (Sigh.) Not that we don’t still have a great marriage, but after 33 years, well, you know how it is. Anyway, Elon and Giorgia are probably not really an “item,” but they do seem very friendly.
Cool. Good people. pic.twitter.com/6YpgSNjSEg

As for this one, I’m not sure what’s going on here, but it rates a look.

Good times, I’m sure, all around.

Europe, and indeed most of the world, is probably looking at events in the United States in a mixture of anticipation and trepidation, depending on who they are and how friendly their country is to us. But whatever anyone thinks of Donald Trump, he’s no Joe Biden, and that’s an unalloyed good. He’s alert and decisive, things Biden never has been, and it sure seems like much of the world is of the opinion that they’d better start talking to him and right away – because while there may be an empty suit in Washington, in Florida, at Mar-a-Lago, there’s a man with a lot of big plans that is going to be taking the big chair – again – in a little over two weeks. They probably want to know what he’s thinking.
Giorgia Meloni sure seems to have absorbed that fact, and as evidence, we see she has no eye-rolls for Trump.
