Gary Shaw: Former Aston Villa striker dies aged 63

Gary Shaw, the former Aston Villa striker, has died at the age of 63.

The Villa legend, who was a part of the famous 1982 European Cup-winning team, was taken ill and in a serious condition in hospital.

Shaw, who was born in Kingshurst, Birmingham, was a regular visitor at Villa Park through his role as a statistical analyst and regular guest speaker.

He is recognised as one of the greatest strikers to ever play for the club after scoring 79 goals in 213 appearances.

His best moments came when he contributed 18 goals to during Villa’s title-winning season in 1981. Shaw also played a leading role as Villa were crowned champions of Europe the following year.

In his early years, Shaw was recognised as one of the most marketable players in England due to his good looks and footballing talent. However injury problems cut short his career and he would later play briefly for Blackpool, Walsall, Kilmarnock and Shrewsbury Town, as well as trying short spells in Denmark, Austria and Hong Kong.
