Former All-Pro and All-American running back Clinton Portis has joined DeSean Jackson’s staff at Delaware State as running backs coach, the program announced on Wednesday.

Portis played at Miami (Fla.) from 1999 to 2001, then in the NFL from 2002 to 2010. At Miami, he won a national championship in 2001 and earned third-team All-American honors. He spent his first two NFL seasons with the Denver Broncos, earning Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2002. Portis then played the next eight years of his career with the Washington Redskins/Commanders, where he was later named one of the greatest 90 players in franchise history.

Over his professional career, Portis rushed for 9,923 yards with 75 touchdowns. He was twice selected to the Pro Bowl.

In 2022, Portis was sentenced to six months in prison after pleading guilty to conspiracy to defraud the NFL’s medical benefits program as part of a ring of several former players. He later told “The Pivot Podcast” after his release that he didn’t commit the crime and didn’t know about it.

Portis is the latest former NFL star to join the college football coaching ranks, following Jackson to the HBCU program in Delaware. Jackson became the head coach in December. Elsewhere, Hall of Fame running back Marshall Faulk recently joined Deion Sanders’ staff at Colorado, where fellow Hall of Famer Warren Sapp helps coach the defensive line. Eddie George recently completed his fourth year as Tennessee State head coach, and Trent Dilfer has spent the last two years as UAB head coach.
