The first footage showing the wreckage of the Titan submersible was released by the US Coast Guard Marine Board of Investigation (MBI) on Tuesday, September 17, as part of a public hearing into the vessel’s 2023 implosion.

This footage, which was captured on June 22 last year, shows the Titan submersible’s severed tail cone and other debris from the incident. The wreck is located several hundred yards from the location of the Titanic shipwreck, officials said.

All five people on board the vessel were killed in their ill-fated attempt to dive to the Titanic. The passengers included Stockton Rush, the CEO of OceanGate; British businessman Hamish Harding; British-Pakistani billionaire Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman Dawood; and French diver Paul-Henri Nargeolet.

The coast guard convened the MBI to determine the causes of the Titan submersible’s destruction.

The public hearing began in Charleston, South Carolina, on September 16, with 24 witnesses scheduled to give evidence over an estimated two weeks. Credit: DVIDS via Storyful
