STORY: :: Hundreds of firefighters struggle to contain

an out-of-control fire raging in central Spain

:: August 7, 2024

:: La Estrella, Spain

:: The fire was caused by a car accident, which spread

quickly due to high temperatures and low humidity

More than 200 people, including firefighters of the Spanish Military Emergency Unit worked in the area using helicopters and heavy machinery to create a firebreak around the perimeter of the blaze.

The blaze burned at least 2,500 hectares (6,177 acres), forcing authorities to confine four towns to prevent smoke exposure. It was caused by a car accident earlier on Tuesday and the flames quickly spread due to the high temperature and low humidity of the area.
