A blaze with an undetermined cause destroyed a two-story house at 6240 North Main Extension in the Town of Hornellsville Wednesday night.
North Hornell Fire Chief Mike Robbins said the fire was called in around 7 p.m. and was brought under control by firefighters by about 9 p.m. There were no injuries.
A Steuben County fire investigation team was on scene Wednesday. Robbins said their preliminary finding to the cause is “undetermined.”

Hornellsville home was vacant at time of fire
The structure is considered a total loss and what remains there will have to be demolished, Robbins said.
Fire officials believe the residence was vacant, with the former tenants recently moving to another house on the same street.
“They were moving out but they still had stuff in there. So there was nobody actually living in the house from what we understand,” Robbins said.
The blaze triggered an automatic response by the volunteer fire departments in North Hornell and Arkport, as well as a Hornell Fire Department ambulance.
Mutual aid, including equipment and manpower, was deployed by the Almond, Canisteo, Fremont and Canisteo volunteer fire departments.
Robbins said a neighbor reported the blaze, saying the front of the house, including the porch, was on fire.
“When I got there it was fully involved in the front of the house and what it looked like it did was start in the front of the house, go into the attic, and then towards the back of the house,” Robbins said.
