“It’s one of those times when I’m just reminded why I’m here and how important our mission is,” said Ruth Thompson, director of the ANNA Shelter.

It was just over a week ago when Thompson got a call about a dead dog found on a driveway.

Rising from the ashes – Presumably dead dog found freezing outside saved by ANNA Shelter

The dog brought to the ANNA Shelter was motionless, emaciated and frozen, but then it let out a soft moan.

“I just rallied the team and we got in there and unbelievably saved her life because it was literally between her and God at that point,” said Thompson.

Thompson said the dog’s owner was located, but an investigation didn’t uncover enough evidence to lead to criminal charges.

“The good news is we’ll monitor this home and make sure they can’t own pets again as far as we’re concerned,” she said.

The dog, fittingly named Phoenix given its rise from apparent death, received an outpouring of support from as far away as Dubai. But the right adopter was difficult to find since she had frostbite, gastrointestinal issues and food-guarding behaviors. That special person arrived this week.

A man walked into the ANNA Shelter planning to adopt another dog but when he met Phoenix there was an instant bond.

“The minute he saw her his eyes filled up with tears and he said ‘Can I pet her?’ and that was it. He came in every day that week to check on her to ask about her and it just worked out perfect. Poor Ace didn’t get a home because of it,” said Thompson.

Meet Ace, a rottweiler mix who Thompson said would fit in with any family. He’s waiting at the ANNA Shelter for his forever home.
