The competitive picture going into qualifying in a few hours is so unclear, I’m really not sure what to expect!
Lando Norris looked rapid for McLaren yesterday, leaving Max Verstappen to admit that he and Red Bull needed to find a bit more performance, even if the windy and drizzle didn’t make it overly clear just how big the gap was at the front. Today, Mercedes has surged to the front, with George Russell leading Lewis Hamilton in a 1-2 finish. Norris was P3 for McLaren – a result that, if repeated on Sunday, would go down very well with the home crowd.
If this kind of weather keeps up through qualifying, then it really could be anybody’s game in the battle for pole position. It could come down to minor factors: getting the lap timed well or the tires in the right temperature window. Small things could have a significant impact.
I’m really excited, particularly if things stay damp. A mixed-up grid for Sunday would be even better.
