Ever Heard of Leonard Leo? He Might Just Be the Republicans' George Soros

It seems like Republicans and conservatives have been complaining forever about the left and their near-chokehold influence on every institution in America. From government to entertainment, there is a not-so-thin veil of liberalism over much of American society. It’s been a long time in the making, but instead of complaining about it, is there something we can do? There is one guy who thinks so and has the financial muscle to give it a try.

My colleague Ward Clark recently introduced us to Lenard Leo. Leo is a conservative activist, founder of the Federalist Society, and, more importantly, a billionaire. Like most conservative Americans, Leo is tired of the left pushing its way into every corner of American society and culture. He is willing to start fighting back…in a big way: translation, less talk, more action, “fewer seminars, more campaigns.” In a letter to various groups he supports, Leo was to the point about what he wants to do, “crush liberal dominance at the choke points of influence and power in our society.” He added that the goal is to direct “funding to operationalize or weaponize the conservative vision.”

In a nutshell, Leo is urging the right to get aggressive, and he has roughly $1 billion that he is willing to put up to help get conservatives in a more aggressive frame of mind. Personally, I like that he used the term “weaponize” because that is exactly where we are at. Conservatives have spent an enormous amount of time and money being nice and trying to get along with the left. It has gotten us candidates like Mitt Romney. It has gotten us squishy Republicans who think they can work with the left, but that just means that they will cave to them.

Here’s the thing. While average conservative Americans in flyover country have no problem getting more aggressive, it’s the people they have sent to Washington, D.C., who are the problem. There are a few Republican happy warriors; we know who they are. They are the ones who are not afraid of or want to be a part of the Uniparty. They don’t care if they get invited to all the right cocktail parties, and they don’t care if the media likes them or not. But with his financial support of groups in the arenas of finance, election integrity, consumer protection, and encroaching left-wing ideology in the medical profession, Leonard Leo would separate the serious conservatives from the Uniparty and give grassroots Americans a chance to push back.

Will more conservative Republican lawmakers have the…well…spine, to support their constituents in a fight that, as Ward Clark rightly points out, began nearly one hundred years ago and would be a mammoth uphill battle? Well, that is their actual job, to do what the people who elected them want. But politicians aside, if other conservative financiers like Leo see that what he is doing is getting results in pushing what he called in his letter “the conservative vision,” would they jump on board, creating an entire network of conservative funding? The prospect is a juicy one.

Leonard Leo’s call for conservatives to be more aggressive in the fight against the left-wing takeover of American culture and society harkens back to America’s original happy warrior, the late Andrew Breitbart. As conservative media was just getting a foothold, Breitbart was the model for conservative boldness and aggressiveness in dealing with the left. Can you imagine, if he were still with us, just how bold and aggressive he would be today? It would undoubtedly be something to see. The time is ripe for a right-wing George Soros, and Leonard Leo is willing to be that guy. Andrew Breitbart is definitely smiling at the prospect.
