Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) probably didn’t know she had pulled the short straw when she was asked to give the Democrat rebuttal to President Donald Trump’s Joint Address on Tuesday. Slotkin has spent her political career in Congress (first in the House of Representatives) pretending to be a reasonable Democrat, but as they say in the South: That dog don’t hunt, especially after the bare-assed sideshow her party presented during the president’s address. No matter how reasonable it might seem, anything Slotkin had to say after that has fallen on deaf ears. When you cannot applaud a young cancer survivor and his dream or honor grieving mothers who lost their babies thanks to Democrat policies, you’ve pretty much lost the plot.
Slotkin’s rebuttal was a series of manufactured lies spoken in a tone that seemed measured and common sense. This fits, because if you read any of the local Michigan press, much of her resume is manufactured lies. Slotkin is a fabulist who worked for the CIA and was part of the Iraq War debacle. Then she floated into Congress on a bed of strained half-truths.
WATCH:
Unlike former Republican Rep. George Santos (NY), no one is clamoring to call her out on her curated resume or remove her from Congress because of it. While Slotkin barely eked out a Senate win (0.3 percent), she maintained the seat for the Democrats. Michigan creates less politicians and more placeholders. See, Dingell, Debbie.
Elissa Slotkin’s response is boring and forgettable.
Nobody cares.

Slotkin started her rebuttal by putting on the reasonable schtick act: ticking off her bipartisan bona fides of having worked under Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama. Then she talked about how her family is “just like us” common folk. They are not. As the video notes above, Slotkin is heiress to a hot dog fortune and will also inherit one of the largest meat-packing enterprises in the state of Michigan. She’s not like us, but she at least read the room and realized that the common man and populism are the order of the day.
It reminds me of how I grew up. My dad was a lifelong Republican, my mom a lifelong Democrat. But it was never a big deal: because we had shared values that were bigger than any one party.
America wants change, but there’s a responsible way to make change and a reckless way. And we can make that change without forgetting who we are as a country and as a democracy.
There’s the first slip-up. We are not a democracy; we are a constitutional republic that uses democratic means to decide elections. But Democrats hate the representative republic and want you to forget what America is.
Senator Elissa Slotkin lost my interest when she called our Constitutional Republic a democracy. You can’t lead a country if you don’t know what it is, fool.
No vote for you. pic.twitter.com/opizGNnwjH— ⚜Sara_Barista⚜ (@SaraBarista1) March 5, 2025
Then Slotkin tried to allege that she knew what Americans’ core beliefs were and failed miserably in their articulation.
So that’s what I’m going to lay out tonight. Because whether you are from Wyandotte or Wichita most Americans share three core beliefs: That the middle class is the engine of our country. That strong national security protects us from harm. And that our democracy, no matter how messy, is unparalleled and worth fighting for.
If that’s the case, in her three terms in the House of Representatives, why did Slotkin do little to improve the middle-class slide in her state?
Michigan wages have fallen dramatically compared to other states since 2000, and the state has lost on some high-profile investments, prompting Gov. Gretchen Whitmer to bet big on business incentives in 2022 with a $2 billion fund to compete for big job-creating projects.
But a Bridge Michigan investigation found the median pay for jobs created with the help of $335 million in subsidies last year is about $24 per hour. That’s well under the $64,130 to about $70,000 per year generally considered middle income.
Yet, Slotkin crapped all over Trump’s policies as “not even close” to helping Americans do better and spouted the usual stupidity about Trump’s tax cuts giving away trillions to his “billionaire friends.”

The fact that Democrats consider this a win reflects how out of touch they remain. When Slotkin brought up how Trump planned to come after Americans’ retirement and how Elon Musk called Social Security “the biggest Ponzi scheme of all time,” it was lights out. Congress, not Elon Musk, has made Social Security what it is (and is not) today, and Slotkin has been a member of Congress going on seven years now. So, who is the one complicit?
In terms of strong national security, Slotkin is also no beacon of light, as local journalist Charlie LeDuff writes.
Slotkin was recruited by the CIA after 9/11 and did three tours in Iraq. That much is true. She worked from 2003-2017 for the alphabet soup of the American Intelligence agencies: CIA, DNI, NSC, DOS, and DOD. Her specialty was supposedly Iraq and Iran, and she climbed to the highest echelons of the Deep State during America’s abject adventures in Mesopotamia.
It was under her advice and counsel, in part, that a quarter-million Iraqi civilians were killed; nearly 40,000 American service members died or suffered injuries; the state sanctioned torture; the dark prisons; the sieges of Fallujah; the rise of Isis, and the failed Iran nuclear deal.
Yet, Slotkin claims that Trump stole “Peace through Strength” from President Ronald Reagan and that after Trump and Vance’s throw-down with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office, Reagan must be rolling in his grave.
Doubt it, but Democrats are grasping at straws at this point. After Zelensky caved, and Trump announced in his address that they had captured the top terrorist responsible for the murders of 13 U.S. servicemembers at Abbey Gate during the Afghanistan withdrawal, any conscious aide would have made Slotkin rethink this line. But, Democrats are not conscious, just Woke.
Wow. @ElissaSlotkin is giving ALL the tired Democrat talking points.
Nothing new, nothing moderate, all Lefty outrage.
She is proving that she isn’t curious or different.
She’s a hard lefty.

Finally, Slotkin gave advice on how Americans can fight for “democracy” against the evils of the Trump administration. In her recommendations, she made this surprising statement: “Hold your elected officials—including me—accountable. Watch how they’re voting.” Good advice, Elissa. Let’s see how you voted recently on the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act. Oh, that’s right, you didn’t vote at all!
Democrat Senator Elissa Slotkin says to hold your elected officials accountable and watch how they’re voting.
Hey @SenatorSlotkin, why did you not vote yesterday to protect women and girls from being beat up by men in female sports??? pic.twitter.com/qwGLiwHHyU

Slotkin was so busy preparing for her rebuttal and arranging to have it broadcast from the “heartland” of Wyandotte, Michigan, that she couldn’t get to D.C. to do her job and vote on this piece of legislation to protect women and girls. This is on brand for Slotkin and the Democrat Party she serves.
The entire rebuttal was a disjointed mishmash of Democrat talking points and inventions. In other words, the usual crazy-supposedly-wrapped-in-reasonable package.
As Jack Nicholson’s character said in the film, “As Good as It Gets”: “Go sell crazy elsewhere, we’re all stocked up here.”
Here’s the full rebuttal for those interested.
