Fortunately, multisensory approaches offer a proven and effective method to help students with dyslexia improve their reading, writing, and spelling skills. What Is A Multisensory Approach? 

A multisensory approach to learning involves engaging more than one sense at a time – such as sight, sound, touch, and movement – to enhance the brain’s ability to process information. For students with dyslexia, who may struggle with processing written language, integrating multiple senses can create new pathways in the brain, making it easier to learn and retain information. 

Why Does It Work For Dyslexia? 

Dyslexia is primarily a phonological processing disorder, meaning that individuals with dyslexia often have difficulty connecting sounds with their corresponding letters or words. Traditional teaching methods, which rely heavily on visual and auditory processing, can be insufficient for these students. 

Multisensory approaches, however, provide alternative ways to access and process language. For example, when a student learns to spell a word, they might see the word, hear it spoken, trace it with their finger, and say it aloud. This simultaneous engagement of multiple senses reinforces learning and aids memory retention. The brain is not only reading or hearing the word; it is also physically and kinaesthetically involved in the learning process.

How To Implement Multisensory Techniques At Home 

Parents can and should play a crucial role in supporting their children’s literacy development by incorporating multisensory techniques into everyday learning. Here are a few activities and strategies to try at home: 

  • Sandpaper Letters
    Encourage your child to trace letters on sandpaper while saying the corresponding sound aloud. This combines tactile and auditory learning. 
  • Use of Manipulatives
    Letter tiles, magnetic letters, or even Scrabble pieces can be used to build words. Physically manipulating letters helps reinforce spelling patterns. 
  • Finger Tracing
    Have your child trace words in the air or on a textured surface while spelling them out loud. This kinaesthetic activity strengthens the connection between the physical movement and the word’s spelling. 
  • Read Aloud and Echo Reading
    Read a passage aloud to your child, then have them repeat it back to you. This auditory exercise helps reinforce fluency and comprehension.
