Daniele de Rossi has been sacked as Roma head coach after eight months in charge.

The ex-Italy midfielder, who made 616 appearances for the club as a player, was sacked on Wednesday morning.

In a statement announcing his exit, Roma thanked De Rossi for his “passion and dedication”, adding the decision had been taken in “the interest of the team”.

Roma have made a winless start to the new Serie A season, taking three points from their opening four games, with three draws and one defeat to Empoli.

De Rossi leaves after Roma were held to a 1-1 draw at Genoa on Sunday thanks to Koni De Winter’s stoppage-time equaliser. De Rossi was shown a red card for his reaction to the goal.

The 41-year-old was initially appointed on an interim basis following Jose Mourinho’s sacking in January.

In June, he was given a three-year contract as reward for turning Roma’s season around after securing a sixth-placed finish in Serie A and leading the club to the semi-finals of the Europa League.

Prior to his stint with Roma, De Rossi began his managerial career at Serie B side SPAL. He was sacked after 17 games at the helm and replaced his former Italy team-mate Massimo Oddo.

De Rossi played over 600 times for Roma between 2001 and 2019, winning the Coppa Italia on two occasions.

He made 117 appearances for his country at international level and was part of the Italy squad that won the World Cup in 2006, where he served a four-game suspension for elbowing USA striker, Brian McBride.
