Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson suffered a right hip injury during Sunday’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers and will not return.

Richardson injured his hip on a 16-yard run while being tackled by Steelers safety DeShon Elliott with 5:42 left in the first quarter. Elliott also stripped Richardson and forced a fumble, but it was Pittsburgh safety Minkah Fitzpatrick who came in and hit Richardson on his right hip. Indianapolis center Tanor Bortolini recovered the loose ball, but Richardson stayed down.

Richardson eventually got up and limped off under his own power. He was sidelined for two plays, allowing backup quarterback Joe Flacco to make his season debut, before re-entering the game and getting injured again on another run play. Richardson kept the ball on a zone read, and while Fitzpatrick brought Richardson down again after a 1-yard gain, it appeared as if Richardson pulled up lame on his own rather than Fitzpatrick causing the injury.

Richardson went to the locker room when he limped off the field again. Two plays later, Flacco threw a 4-yard TD pass to Josh Downs to give Indianapolis a 14-0 lead.

Richardson was only in the locker room for a few minutes before re-emerging from the tunnel and jogging. He appeared to be testing out his hip by jogging down the sideline, though Flacco remained in the game.

Richardson, the No. 4 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, was limited to just four games last season after sustaining a season-ending AC joint sprain.

While on the sideline, Richardson, wearing a towel on his head instead of his usual helmet, stood next to third-string quarterback Sam Ehlinger.
