The future of work is being redefined, and TechCrunch Disrupt 2024 is the place to explore it. As companies look to leverage talent from around the globe, the landscape of hiring is transforming — and there’s a new wave of global HR startups that are making this change possible.

Yet, the question remains: Can these new solutions replace local subsidiaries, or do they merely fill the gaps? In this era of borderless hiring, understanding the dynamics of remote work, compliance, and talent management is crucial for founders and investors alike. Corinne Beksha, COO of Check; Marcelo Lebre, president and co-founder of Remote; and Josh Reeves, CEO of Gusto take the Fintech Stage to discuss this evolving landscape.

Corinne, Marcelo, and Josh are visionary leaders who have each built and scaled companies that are shaping how global teams are hired, managed, and paid. From embedded payroll to seamless cross-border HR, they are at the forefront of this revolution. We are excited to share this opportunity to gain insights on how startups can thrive by rethinking what it means to work across borders and how technology is enabling the future of employment.

Meet the speakers

Corinne Beksha, COO, Check

Corinne Beksha leads Revenue, Operations, and G&A functions at Check, where she’s focused on simplifying payroll through embedded finance. Corinne brings a decade of experience from her time on Goldman Sachs’ trading floor and her tenure at Plaid, where she held multiple leadership roles, including chief of staff to the CEO. She’s an advocate for pay transparency, diversity, and equity — a commitment evident in her leadership at Check, where compensation bands are publicly shared to ensure fair pay for all. Corinne’s extensive background in fintech and her passion for operational excellence make her a critical voice in the discussion on the future of work and equitable hiring practices.

Marcelo Lebre, president and co-founder, Remote

Marcelo Lebre co-founded Remote to tackle the very challenge he faced at GitLab: the complexities of hiring remote talent across multiple countries. Today, Remote’s platform helps companies hire, manage, and pay employees in over 75 countries, simplifying the global HR stack with solutions like payroll, local compliance, and employer-of-record services. Marcelo’s experience as a startup adviser, CTO, and VP of Engineering informs his belief in a borderless talent pool that allows businesses to hire the best candidates, regardless of location. His commitment to making work accessible and scalable has driven Remote to unicorn status, with clients such as Aston Martin.

Josh Reeves, CEO, Gusto

Josh Reeves leads Gusto, a company that supports over 300,000 businesses with payroll, health insurance, HR, and compliance. Under Josh’s leadership, Gusto has grown its embedded payroll service and entered partnerships, including a collaboration with Remote to facilitate hiring across borders. Josh’s vision for a world where work empowers life is evident in Gusto’s journey to over $500 million in annual revenue and its approach to international expansion. By supporting both local and remote talent, Gusto is enabling a future where companies have the flexibility to build teams that span the globe without sacrificing compliance or employee support.
