Los Angeles Chargers fans will have to continue waiting to see whether quarterback Justin Herbert will play Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers after injuring his ankle last weekend. The Chargers listed Herbert as questionable Friday for the Week 3 matchup.

He told reporters Friday he’s dealing with a high ankle sprain, which he sustained in Sunday’s win over the Carolina Panthers.

Herbert did not participate in Friday’s practice, though he worked off to the side during a portion of it, with significant taping on his right ankle. He also missed practice Wednesday and was limited Thursday.

Herbert sustained the injury while facing pressure off his right side in the third quarter against the Panthers. Herbert tried to get a pass off to Gus Edwards as he was brought down by edge rusher D.J. Johnson. But, due to the position — Johnson had Herbert’s legs wrapped up while defensive lineman Jayden Peevy hit him up top — Herbert fumbled.

His leg was caught awkwardly beneath him and he was slow to get up. He said after the game that he got his ankle tapped by the medical staff after the play. He did not miss a snap and still finished the game.

Coach Jim Harbaugh was asked Wednesday about Herbert possibly missing Sunday’s game.

“Crystal ball? Expect him to get better every day,” Harbaugh said. “I was just in a meeting with him. Said he was feeling much better and good today.”

The ankle injury is on the same side as Herbert’s plantar fascia injury that kept him out of most of training camp.
