Brighton are closing in on keeping Danny Welbeck for at least one more season.
Talks are ongoing over a new one or two-year deal for the former Manchester United, Arsenal and England forward.
Nothing has been signed yet, but they are expected to reach a successful conclusion in the near future.
The Athletic revealed in February that Brighton were optimistic about extending Welbeck’s stay, having started discussions with the 33-year-old’s representatives.
Welbeck’s current two-year contract expires in the summer. He has scored six goals in 31 appearances in all competitions this season.
He missed two months of the campaign from October to December after sustaining a hamstring injury.
Head coach Roberto De Zerbi, speaking about Welbeck earlier this month, said: “In my time it is his best moment, great player, great guy.
“We have to keep him for a lot of years. He is playing very well and he is important for the young players, for the dressing room.”
Welbeck has scored 25 goals in 119 appearances overall for Brighton since joining on a free transfer from Watford in October 2020.
He became the fifth player in Brighton’s history to score more than 20 goals for the club in the Premier League when he was on target in a 5-0 win at Sheffield United in February.
