On Wednesday, United States Attorney General Pam Bondi announced that the federal Department of Justice has filed charges against the State of New York, as well as against state figures including Governor Kathy Hochul, Attorney General Letitia James, and Department of Motor Vehicles Commissioner Mark Schroeder.

AG Bondi said:
We’re here today because we have filed charges against the State of New York, we have filed charges against Kathy Hochul, we have filed charges against Letitia James and Mark Schroeder who is with DMV. This is a new DOJ, and we are taking steps to protect Americans, American citizens, and Angel Moms, like the mom standing right behind me here, who you’re going to hear from in a moment. New York has chosen to prioritize illegal aliens over American citizens. It stops – it stops today.
The charges, as Bondi described, accuse New York and its officials of violating federal immigration laws.

AG Bondi continued:
President Trump has directed this to stop. And if you don’t comply with federal law, we will hold you accountable. We did it to an Illinois (sic) strike one, strike two is New York. And if you are a state not complying with federal law, you’re next, get ready.
Bondi was only just confirmed a week ago; it certainly hasn’t taken her long to take control.

This shouldn’t come as a huge surprise to any of the blue-state officials named in any of these suits. Border czar Tom “The Hammer” Homan has not been shy about proclaiming that any state, city, or other local officials who attempt to impede federal officials in their tasks of locating, detaining, and repatriating illegal aliens would face federal charges. AG Pam Bondi would appear to be serious about this as well. That’s as it should be; President Trump made mass repatriations an issue in his campaign, he spoke long and repeatedly on the topic, and a considerable percentage of Americans, in recent surveys, support the effort.
One wonders how long it will take AG Bondi to set her sights on other blue states – California, for example, which is the state with (by a considerable margin) the state with the highest number of illegal immigrants. The California Assembly is already appropriating funds to shelter illegal aliens; that may well be AG Bondi’s next legal battlefield. But, as Democrats insisted during the previous administration, immigration is a federal, not a state, issue. Shoe’s on the other foot now.
