MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Months after a shopper at an East Memphis grocery store was hurt trying to fight off a purse snatcher, an arrest has been made in the case.

Police said Marquisha Burrow, 25, was captured on camera inside the Superlo Foods on Spottswood during the robbery and a short time later at City Gear using the victim’s credit card.

Burrow was booked in the Shelby County Jail Thursday for robbery, theft of property, identity theft, fraudulent use of a credit card, and forgery.

The victim, who didn’t want to be identified, said she was shopping at the Superlo when she noticed Burrow and a teenage girl following her. She said the teen ran toward her and grabbed her purse, which was strapped into the baby seat on her shopping cart.

“She and I fought over it. Finally, the strap broke, and it was caught in my finger and ripped my finger open. I couldn’t get it out. I was running through the parking lot with that purse strap attached to my finger.”

She said there was also a boy with Burrow, and all three got into a waiting car nearby.

“The 15-year-old snatched my purse, but that woman was the ringleader,” said the victim. “I chased them to their car, and there was some older man driving, and they had a plastic bag for a window. I was beating on it, saying, ‘My purse!’ Because this is my third time to be a victim of violent crime in the city.”

Investigators said Burrow used the victim’s credit card and bank information to make a $900 purchase at City Gear and a $400 purchase at Lowe’s. Police said she also used Venmo to send herself $350.

The victim said her purse and wallet were worth nearly $3,000.

“I loved that purse,” the victim said. “I work hard for my stuff.”

Detectives released pictures of the purse snatching suspects on Facebook and said a CrimeStoppers tip led to Burrow. The victim told WREG she didn’t know Burrow had been arrested.

“I haven’t heard back from police to go to court or anything,” she said.

Court records show between 2020 and 2023, Burrow pleaded guilty to attempted theft of property, theft of merchandise less than $1,000, and theft of property less than $1,000 in three separate cases. She was sentenced to a total of four days in jail.

“I thought they were going to do an assault charge because I was bleeding,” said the victim.

Burrow is scheduled to appear in court on Friday.
