Norwegian professional cyclist Andre Drege has died following a crash during the Tour of Austria.

The 25-year-old, a rider for Team Coop-Repsol, suffered the accident during a mountain descent on stage 4 of the event on Saturday.

Race organisers said the incident happened during the descent of the Grossglockner where Drege “crashed and sustained severe injuries”.

Filippo Ganna of Ineos Grenadiers won the stage. The usual podium presentations were subsequently cancelled.

A statement from Team Coop-Repsol read: “We are devastated by the tragic passing of Andre Drege.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Andre’s family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.

“Andre’s family has requested privacy as they mourn their loss, and we kindly ask that their wishes are respected.”

The UCI, cycling’s world governing body added: “The UCI is devastated to learn of the death of professional cyclist Andre Drege at the Tour of Austria

“Our thoughts are with his family, friends and teammates.”

A number of teams paid tribute to Drege, who had won a number of races this year, and was widely tipped to move up to the pro tour in 2025.

Movistar, currently competing at the Tour de France, said: “Keeping everybody within Team Coop-Repsol and Andre Drege’s loved ones in our thoughts after a horrible tragedy at the Tour of Austria today. Big hugs from everyone here. Stay strong.”
