An American Airlines (AAL) flight collided in midair with a helicopter as it approached Reagan Washington National Airport on Wednesday night, the FAA said.
“A PSA Airlines Bombardier CRJ700 regional jet collided in midair with a Sikorsky H-60 helicopter while on approach to Runway 33 at Reagan Washington National Airport around 9 p.m. local time,” the FAA said in its statement.
“PSA was operating as Flight 5342 for American Airlines. It departed from Wichita, Kansas. The FAA and NTSB will investigate. The NTSB will lead the investigation.”
In a post on X, American said it was aware flight 5342, operated by its regional brand American Eagle, “has been involved in an incident.”
The company said it would provide information as soon as it becomes available.
The DC Police Department said in a statement on Wednesday there was a search and rescue operation ongoing in the Potomac River.
