Erik ten Hag says Alejandro Garnacho has apologised after liking social media posts criticising the Manchester United manager’s decision to substitute him in the draw at Bournemouth last weekend.

The Argentine winger was removed at half-time of the 2-2 Premier League draw on Saturday evening and shortly after the end of the game liked a number of tweets questioning the decision.

He swiftly unliked the posts with United later confirming the matter had been dealt with internally.

Ten Hag has revealed the 19-year-old has apologised for his actions as he seeks to draw a line under the episode.

“Alejandro is a young player and has to learn a lot,” he said during his press conference ahead of the FA Cup semi-final against Coventry City on Sunday.

“He apologised for it and after that we move on.”

Garnacho has made 42 appearances in all competitions for United in a breakthrough season, scoring nine goals.

United are without a win in four games with their last victory coming in the FA Cup quarter-final win over Liverpool in March.

Ten Hag says he understands the expectations to perform more consistently and urged his side to take the “big opportunity” of reaching another Wembley final after finishing runners-up a year ago.

“Yes, of course we want to win every game so when we don’t win we are disappointed,” he said.

“We are frustrated but we know also we can beat the best teams. We drew twice against Liverpool, we beat them in the FA Cup, we played very good against Chelsea.

“When we play to our levels we can achieve really high highs. Last season was last season. We want to achieve every season, we want to win trophies, we have a big opportunity. We are in a semi-final but it’s a huge challenge.”
