While I admit I’ve never been big on participating in Valentine’s Day celebrations, one thing I am very much interested in celebrating is all things Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA).

And that is where we find ourselves today, where both the sugary sweetness of Valentine’s Day and the wit and intellect of Kennedy intersect in such a way that fans of one or the other – or both – likely will be able to appreciate.

Kennedy, as RedState readers will agree if comments to previous posts are a reliable indicator, is an absolute national treasure, sharing his words of wisdom on any given day as only he can while effortlessly cutting Democrats, the media, and their warped agendas down to size in a unique manner that leaves little (if any) room for argument.

FLASHBACK: Sen. John Kennedy Hilariously Puts UFO Congressional Hearing in Perspective With His Usual Flair

On Valentine’s Day 2025, Kennedy revived a humorous and timeless message he’s used since he first ran for Senate (and won) in 2016 (nearly a decade after he switched parties while serving as state treasurer). That was of course the same year Donald Trump shocked the political establishment by defeating Democrat presidential nominee Hillary Clinton to become President of the United States.

The message? “Folks, I believe that love is the answer, but you oughta own a handgun just in case.”

It’s an ad he also ran during his 2022 reelection campaign:

He’s also made the statement during interviews in situations where Democrats and corporate woketivists used national tragedies to push for more gun control measures, like in this Sept. 2019 exchange on Fox Business:

“Now look, here’s my starting point: I want to see facts. I believe love is the answer, but I also own a handgun just in case, and that’s my right as an American citizen,” Kennedy told Fox Business host Stuart Varney. “The Bill of Rights is not an a la carte menu — the Second [Amendment] is just as important as the First or the Fourth.”

[…]

“Some of my colleagues say ‘OK, we’re going to curtail the Second Amendment constitutional right in the interest of public safety and it will reduce mass shootings.’ My response is, ‘OK, prove it,’” he continued. “I’m interested in facts, I’m not interested in speculation. I don’t want to see people pulling stuff out of their orifices. Show me the causal scientific evidence because you’re dealing with a constitutional right.”

Relatedly, if you’re into Kennedy and firearms, you might enjoy this piece from my RedState colleague Ward Clark, who shared the details on how Valentine’s Day is also a big day in firearms history.

And the day just would not be complete without the Trump White House getting into the action with a timely Valentine’s Day message of their own.
