Report: Screaming and Division During Schumer Shutdown Discussions

Looks like Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) may have been exaggerating a bit when it comes to his claims on unity around refusing to vote on the stopgap CR that passed in the House.

According to a new report, he may not have the unity Schumer claimed; there were apparently people considering defecting and voting for the House CR. So, it sounds like it got volatile.

Senate Democrats are in disagreement over how to proceed on the House-passed stopgap spending bill to avert a government shutdown, with some inclined to help advance it and others apparently willing to risk a lapse in funding.

“They’ve been debating what to do, and there’s been people who feel strongly on both sides,” a Democratic source familiar told Fox News Digital, in reference to several lengthy Senate Democratic caucus meetings in the past couple days.

There was even screaming, allegedly.

Press heard who they believed to be Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., screaming inside Democratic senators’ private lunch on Thursday amid ongoing debate over the looming government shutdown.

Democrats remained tight-lipped as they left the meeting, which lasted over an hour, but Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., told reporters: “You’ll hear from me soon.”

Gillibrand’s office isn’t confirming it one way or the other, and if it’s her, they probably don’t want to confirm it. But if they’re reporting it’s her, it sounds like some are pretty sure it was identifiable.

Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ) said he hadn’t made up his mind yet, and a shutdown could be worse than the CR and that “shutdowns were not good.” But then he came out against the CR, saying he would support an alternate 30-day CR proposed by Schumer. So much for any principles from him.

As we already reported, Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) isn’t going to go along with a shutdown. He even nuked the Democratic leadership for the game-playing they were doing by trying to string things along with a 30-day CR, which he said would fail.

He further said no party should “shut the government down” and that it would be a “gift to the Republicans.”

The Pennsylvania Democrat further criticized his colleagues, recalling, “It wasn’t that long ago before we were lecturing that you can never shut the government down. So that’s kind of inconsistent.”

No kidding.

But that’s Democrats, constantly hypocritical, they never stand on principle. Even Fetterman, who may say some good things, ends up voting with the Democrats most of the time.

The Democrats from the swing states know they’re likely to get crunched if they go along with a shutdown, so they’re trying to balance going along with their party or trying to salvage the damage they may face from their voters. They’re already all going to be in tough races, given the low approval that the American people have of Congressional Democrats. So, if they go along with a Schumer Shutdown, they may find themselves out on their ear.

But it sounds like there’s more movement now, so we’ll let you know as soon as more comes in.
