Formula One returns to Australia this weekend, descending on Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne for the first home race of the year for two drivers: McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and Alpine’s Jack Doohan.

The layout of this track is true to its name — a trip around a park.

Originally a mix of swamps and lagoons, Albert Park received its name in 1864 to honor Prince Albert, Queen Victoria’s consort.

It has been used as a military camp, garbage dump, and recreational area throughout its history.

But it became the home to an F1 race in 1996 when the series moved from Adelaide to Melbourne.

It is also a DRS gold mine, with four zones across the three-mile circuit.

Key circuit facts include:

  • Circuit length: 5.28 km (3.28 miles)
  • Laps: 58
  • Lap record: 1:19.813 (Charles Leclerc, 2024)
  • First GP: 1996

There’s loads more to read on Melbourne’s track with Madeline Coleman’s circuit breakdown, which you can enjoy with the link below.
