The Kansas City Chiefs have a new backup quarterback after the team agreed to terms on a one-year contract with Gardner Minshew, according to multiple league sources.

Minshew, who turns 29 in May, was released by the Las Vegas Raiders in early March after finishing the 2024 season with a 2-7 record across nine starts. Minshew initially won the Raiders’ starting quarterback job outright during training camp but was benched three separate times in the first nine games of the season, putting up some of the weakest performances of his career. His nine touchdowns are his fewest in a season with at least eight starts, while his 10 interceptions are a career high.

Since his surprising run as a sixth-round rookie starting quarterback with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2019, Minshew has primarily served as a journeyman stopgap quarterback and backup, with stints on the Raiders, Philadelphia Eagles and Indianapolis Colts. Over six seasons in the NFL, Minshew has a 17-29 record across 46 career starts.

Kansas City routinely employs quarterbacks with starting experience to back up quarterback Patrick Mahomes under head coach Andy Reid. Since Chad Henne’s retirement in 2022, Kansas City has brought in Blaine Gabbert and Carson Wentz to serve as QB2. Both quarterbacks started in the Chiefs’ final regular season game the past two seasons, respectively.
