A new project has been launched to help children in Guernsey who are unable to swim.

It is to be run by Fizzy Fish Swimmers and the Sports Commission and aims to help people who have struggled to afford swimming lessons.

The project is due to start after Easter with a group from Amherst Primary School.

A spokesperson from Fizy Fish Swimmers said: “If funding and access to suitable swimming pools is secured, we will look to expand the pilot to other schools in future.”

‘Important life skill’

They added that the scheme was “targeted at children who cannot swim and where cost is a potential barrier to them learning this important life skill”.

The sessions will work alongside school swimming lessons.

Nicky Will, from the Sports Commission, said some children “miss out on the opportunity to learn to swim” and the scheme aims to provide some “extra help” for those children.

“We are hoping that through this pilot programme with Fizzy Fish we are able to target those children who cannot swim or who need additional support and where cost may be a barrier to them learning.

“By working with schools we are aiming to provide this extra support for those who most need it.”
