Everyone wants to know why Sterling K. Brown’s Paradise character didn’t try harder to save his wife’s life — including the actor’s real-life spouse.

Ryan Michelle Bathe shared her reaction via TikTok ahead of the Tuesday, March 4, season finale in several videos of her watching the hit Hulu series.

“Why didn’t you tell her not to go to Atlanta? Why you ain’t tell her not to go to Atlanta?” Bathe, 48, asked, to which Brown, also 48, replied off screen, “I told her, ‘Don’t go.’”

Bathe noted that Brown’s character, Xavier, could have done more to ensure his onscreen wife’s survival. “If someone tells me not to go to Atlanta, you should give me more than just, ‘Don’t go’ and a kiss,” she continued. “She is about to lose her life.”

Hulu/Courtesy Everett Collection Paradise kept the twists coming all season long — but which questions got answered in the finale? Warning: This story contains spoilers about season 1 of Paradise. During the Tuesday, March 4, episode, Xavier (Sterling K. Brown) pieces together the clues Cal (James Marsden) left behind. Most of the former president’s last […]

Hulu’s political thriller Paradise, which premiered in January, marks a reunion for Brown and creator Dan Fogelman after their time on This Is Us. Paradise initially appeared to be set in a serene and wealthy community forced to face the realities of a shocking murder. In typical Fogelman fashion, however, there was a twist at the end of the premiere when Paradise was revealed to be an underground bunker housing the world’s most prominent individuals after an apocalyptic event destroyed the rest of humanity.

Through various flashbacks, the audience learned that Xavier knew about the upcoming end of the world and tried to convince his wife not to leave for a trip. She chose to go and was ultimately left to her own devices when President Cal (James Marsden) couldn’t reunite her with Xavier in time.

Paradise’s cast spoke to Us Weekly about how they kept the show a secret before its premiere.

“The biggest lengths [we had to go through to keep the twist secret] are happening now when we’re actually talking to people about it,” Julianne Nicholson told Us in January. “When we were on set, everybody knows what’s up, so we don’t have to be that secretive.”

She continued: “But now the trick is how do you grab people’s attention and assure them that this is something different without giving away any of the details? But we’re very excited for people to get on the ride with us.”

In addition to the bunker reveal, Marsden’s character was killed off minutes into the premiere. While it was already revealed that Paradise would be following the high stakes investigation into Cal’s death, the first three episodes introduced several suspects who could have benefited from the former president’s death.

“Whenever the scripts would come out, they weren’t secretive. I’ve been on projects in which they would not release the script until you were ready to shoot those pages,” Sarah Shahi shared with Us. “But then this one, they were not selfish with their scripts. The minute one was ready to come out, they would send it over to us.”

Nicholson was thrilled to see the show utilizing Marsden’s skills as an actor, adding, “He’s James Marsden. He is one of the most charming, affable, funny, lovable and handsome people. I think he also has a self-deprecating side of himself that I saw within this character that makes you feel for him.”

All episodes of Paradise are currently streaming on Hulu.
