PITTSBURGH — Boston Bruins captain Brad Marchand needed help leaving the ice after a hit from behind by the Pittsburgh Penguins’ P.O. Joseph at PPG Paints Arena on Saturday afternoon.

Marchand’s upper left side appeared to collide near the dasher area that separates the boards and glass after he was hit from behind by Joseph at 14:04 of the opening period. Marchand was attempting to play a puck and may have slightly lost his footing at the point of contact from Joseph, who was not called for a penalty.

Marchand is second on the Bruins with 21 goals and 47 points. A pending unrestricted free agent, he and the team have said they want him to finish his career with Boston.

He ranks 22nd on The Athletic’s latest trade board.

What it means for the Bruins’ deadline

Marchand remains in negotiations with the Bruins regarding an extension. To this point, he is not in favor of being traded to a legitimate Stanley Cup contender. Given the circumstances, if Marchand has to miss time because of the injury, it may be another deterrent toward a trade before the March 7 deadline.

Marchand’s concussion history

Marchand has yet to miss a game this season. However, the left wing missed two games in Round 2 of last year’s playoffs because of a concussion delivered by the Florida Panthers’ Sam Bennett.

On Feb. 22, Marchand had to go through concussion protocol after he took a tumble into the TD Garden boards during the third period of the Bruins’ 3-2 overtime loss to the Anaheim Ducks. The captain returned later in the third.
