The New Orleans Saints are set to hire former Los Angeles Chargers head coach Brandon Staley to serve as defensive coordinator, league sources told The Athletic Friday.
The move will reunite Staley, the Chargers’ coach from 2021 to 2023, with new Saints head coach Kellen Moore, who served as his offensive coordinator during the ’23 season. The role will be the 42-year-old Staley’s second as a DC in the NFL, with his first coming in 2020 with the Los Angeles Rams.
Staley heads to New Orleans following a one-year stint as an assistant head coach for the San Francisco 49ers in 2024. His work alongside coach Kyle Shanahan allowed him to stay involved on the sidelines after a lukewarm three-year Chargers tenure that produced a combined 24-24 record, with only playoff appearance that ended with a wild-card loss in 2022.
Staley will now look to revitalize a struggling Saints defense. He’ll inherit a unit that concluded the 2024 season as one of the NFL’s worst, finishing the year ranked 30th in total yards allowed (379.9) and 19th in points allowed (23.4 ppg) per game.
