There was a moment in time when Lewis Hamilton would have scoffed at the idea he’d still be racing in F1 at the age of 40.

With so many interests outside of the sport, it seemed like he would be happy to call it a day in his mid-to-late 30s having enjoyed a glittering, successful career.

But after turning 40 in January, Hamilton remains as hungry and — importantly — as fit as ever.

He has adjusted his training and his diet as he’s got older to ensure he remains in peak condition, and the move to Ferrari has clearly re-energized him.

His difficult final season at Mercedes will have naturally raised questions about whether he still has that edge to cut it at the very top level.

But speaking today at Maranello, Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur made clear he has zero concerns:

💬 “He showed in Abu Dhabi, starting from the back and coming back to P4, I think, overtaking (George) Russell in the last lap, that the pace is there. I had no doubt before.

“He’s the perfect fit with the team today. It’s exactly what I was looking for, for the team, for me, for Charles (Leclerc). I think it’s the perfect combination.”
