The weekend weather in Tampa, Florida featured pleasant 80-degree days, a mild sea breeze and low humidity. A perfect day for afternoon window washing.

As Cape Codders were preparing for another snow event, freshman cadet John Strell was making his way around a catwalk cleaning glass outside the Patriot State’s bridge.

The Massachusetts’s Maritime Academy’s new training ship arrived at the Port of Tampa Bay on Friday morning. Cadets and staff have rotated through watch and maintenance rounds while also enjoying some liberty off ship to explore the area.

Ship Captain Mike Campbell said he planned to have the ship underway Monday morning, heading out into the Gulf of Mexico.

Patriot State will then go south around the Florida Keys before turning north up the Atlantic coast.

The over 500 cadets will spend the last days of their 52-day sea term helping to run the ship and also completing classroom studies and exams. Depending on the weather, the ship will be back at its berth on the Buzzards Bay campus next weekend.
