The Dallas Mavericks have placed assistant coach Darrell Armstrong on administrative leave while he is under investigation following his arrest on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Armstrong, a 14-year NBA veteran who has been a Mavericks assistant since 2009, was arrested Saturday morning in Dallas, according to a police report obtained by television station WFAA. The Dallas Police Department has not responded to a request from The Athletic for a copy of the report.

According to the report obtained by WFAA, police responded to a call around 3:45 a.m. in the 1000 block of Ross Avenue, where Armstrong and a woman were arguing. The 56-year-old Armstrong allegedly hit the woman with a gun and threatened to shoot her, Dallas police told WFAA.

Armstrong’s bond was set at $35,000, per the report.

“The Dallas Mavericks are aware of an incident involving a member of our staff and are gathering all relevant information surrounding the incident,” the team said in a statement Sunday. “We take this matter seriously. The employee has been placed on administrative suspension pending the outcome of legal proceedings. This matter is currently under review by the appropriate legal authorities. Due to this fact, we will allow the legal process to run its course and we will refrain from further comment while proceedings are ongoing.”

While the team did not name Armstrong in the statement, The Athletic confirmed that he is the staffer who was put on leave.

Armstrong played 114 games in Dallas from 2004 to 2006. He is in his 17th season with the team as a coach.
