Joe Gomez is undergoing further tests amid fears that the Liverpool defender is facing another lengthy spell on the sidelines.

The 27-year-old England international damaged his hamstring just 10 minutes into his comeback in the FA Cup defeat to Plymouth Argyle last Sunday.

Gomez, who has made 11 starts for Arne Slot’s side in all competitions so far this season, had missed the previous six weeks with a similar problem and was left devastated after breaking down once again.

Medical assessments are ongoing as Liverpool wait to learn the full extent of the damage and whether their longest-serving player will require surgery.

Liverpool were furious at the end but the events at Everton should not disrupt their season

Gomez’s absence leaves Slot with three recognised senior centre-backs in Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Jarrel Quansah with Sunday’s home clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers the second of five league matches in the space of a pivotal 15 days. Midfielder Wataru Endo can also operate in the backline.

Curtis Jones will serve a one-match ban on Sunday following his dismissal for picking up a second yellow card in the chaotic scenes after Wednesday’s 2-2 draw with Everton at Goodison Park.

Fellow midfielder Tyler Morton will be another absentee after he underwent successful surgery on his shoulder this week.

The 22-year-old academy graduate had been hampered by the injury since the Carabao Cup tie at Southampton in December.

Morton expects to be out for around three months which means he’s unlikely to play again this season.

The draw at Goodison extended Liverpool’s lead at the top of the Premier League to seven points over Arsenal with 14 games to go.
