Brian Priske has been sacked as Feyenoord head coach two days before their Champions League play-off first leg against Milan.
The 47-year-old was appointed by the Eredivisie side in June after previous head coach Arne Slot left to take over at Liverpool.
But inconsistent results and a lack of progress were cited by the club as the reason for the Dane’s exit.
Despite reaching the Champions League play-off round by finishing 19th in the 36-team league phase — with four wins from eight matches — Feyenoord are fifth in the Eredivisie. They finished runners-up under Slot last season, seven points behind league winners PSV.
Priske’s assistants Lukas Babalola Andersson and Bjorn Hamberg have also been let go while the Dutch club said they would be announcing an interim staff on Tuesday. They host Italian side Milan on Wednesday with the return leg on February 18.
In a statement on the club website, Feyenoord general and technical director Dennis te Kloese said: “It is very disappointing for all parties that we had to come to this decision. Although Feyenoord has certainly achieved impressive results with Brian in the UEFA Champions League, the past few months have been far too inconsistent and we unfortunately see too little structural progress.”
“As a professional and as a person, I still hold Brian in high regard. Sometimes, however, you have to conclude that despite everyone’s good intentions and intentions, it does not work, and at a certain point there is no longer enough support within all levels to continue.”
Feyenoord host Milan in the first leg of their two-legged play-off on Wednesday before returning to league action three days later against NAC Breda, ahead of the second leg against the Serie A side on February 18.
