German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Wednesday launched a sharp critique of his conservative rival Friedrich Merz over his plans to pass motions on migration reform in parliament – even with the support of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD).

“There are limits that you must not cross as a statesman,” said Scholz, calling Merz’s proposals for a stricter migration policy unlawful.

Scholz slammed Merz for saying he would go “all in” on migration plans.

“Politics in our country is not a game of poker. The cohesion of Europe is not a game and a German chancellor must not be a gambler, because in the worst-case scenario he decides on war and peace.”
