“You’ve got to know when to hold ’em, know when to fold ’em.” So says late country music icon Kenny Rogers in his 1978 hit, “The Gambler.”
Since Donald Trump took office on Monday, January 20, less than a week ago, he has shown no compunction to hold or fold on anything—instead, he’s shown a willingness to double down on virtually all his promises.
“Double down” has become such a common phrase that not everyone knows that it means “to double the original bid in blackjack in exchange for only one more card.” According to Merriam-Webster, though, it also now indicates someone becoming “more tenacious, zealous, or resolute in a position or undertaking.”
If that doesn’t describe Trump’s first week, I don’t know what does.
As RedState’s Nick Arama reported Saturday, the president delivered a speech in Las Vegas where he touted his nearly 350 executive orders and his pledge to get rid of taxes on tips—a crowd-pleaser in the service-focused economy of Nevada.
That speech was scheduled. What happened next was not as he unexpectedly appeared on the Circa Resort and Casino floor to mingle with regular Americans as they loudly cheered:

Could you ever in a million years see Joe Biden doing this? Or even Barack Obama, who probably would have turned up his nose at the little people?

Trump even had advice for a gambler:
Prior to the surprise visit, Trump had addressed thousands of supporters at the Circa Resort and Casino in Sin City on Saturday afternoon. Photos and video show Trump strolling around the casino floor after the speech, while surrounded by security.
The crowd began chanting “USA! USA!” as Trump walked past the slot machines. The president was also seen briefly interacting with enthused gamblers.
The president also naturally walked up to a craps table where a game was in progress, telling a player to “throw the dice.”
When journalists shouted questions at Trump, a craps player scolded the press pool and told them, “I’m rolling here.” Trump told a gambler that he was “doing a good job” before leaving.

It’s moments like these that have so many conservatives happy after four dark, dreadful years of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. Speaking of the former vice president, it was her campaign that was supposed to bring “joy” back to America—but it’s Trump, at virtually every appearance, who has actually brought back optimism and hope for a new “Golden Age of America.”
There is much work to be done, but for now at least, Trump holds the winning hand.
I can’t leave you without this:
