PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — As Arctic air blankets the eastern United States, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has released its latest weather outlook for the last week of January — but will Portland see those frigid temps or snow?

NOAA’s temperature outlook for January 24-30, shows temperatures leaning below normal for the Portland metro area.

As far as precipitation, NOAA is forecasting “near normal” chances.

“The middle of the month as been unusually dry,” said KOIN 6 News Meteorologist Josh Cozart. “Portland hasn’t seen measurable rain since January 12 and even then, only 0.04 inches of rain was measured. This has helped grow the rain deficit for the start of the year.”

“However, there is a chance of rain by the end of next week. The high-pressure system that’s stopped any wet weather from moving into the west will slowly start to break down next week,” Cozart explained. “The breakdown will help some of the arctic air felt out east to work its way into parts of western Oregon and Washington. That’s where highs will fall below the average of 47 degrees for this time of year.”

According to Cozart, Portland will get a “taste of winter.”

“The cold impacts will be felt most during the early morning hours. That’s where lows will fall into the upper 20s, marking the coldest temperatures felt in Portland so far this season. On average, Portland should be in the mid-30s when talking about morning lows,” Cozart said.

He added, “This taste of winter won’t last forever. A gradual warming trend is expected next week as rain chances increase. That’s why many temperature outlooks through the end of the month return to near normal conditions.”
