One of the leading issues that Americans voted Donald Trump back into office for was to close the southern border and deport millions of illegal immigrants that the Biden administration has allowed into the country. Trump and his Border Czar, Tom Homan, have plans to do just that. Already, blue cities and states have vowed to fight the incoming Trump administration’s efforts. But while they fancy themselves as the “resistance,” shelters in those cities and states are filling up not only with illegal immigrants but also rampant crime.

Among those shelters are the ones funded by the state government and reserved for families in the blue state of Massachusetts. Since at least 2022, there have been multiple incidents of serious crimes like child rape, drugs, physical assaults, and other crimes. As with other blue states, Massachusetts has doled out millions of taxpayer dollars to house illegal immigrants. Records from the Massachusetts Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities show thousands of pages of what were called “serious reports.”

Among some of the most egregious incidents was a man charged with drug trafficking, when it was discovered by police that he was carrying roughly 900 pills, 30 grams of cocaine, and ammunition. A girl was nearly abducted while taking out the trash, in June of this year; there was an alleged sexual assault involving a child, and perhaps the most vile, a father who sexually assaulted his daughter both on their journey to the U.S. and once they arrived, and impregnated her.

Massachusetts Governor Maura Healy (D) is a bit unwilling to call her state a sanctuary state, but there are plenty of sanctuary cities in the state. Boston is one of them. In 2024, the Boston Police Department received 15 civil requests from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) asking for cooperation with people facing deportation. Each one was refused.

In a state where it is hard to find a Republican, Amy Carnevale is the GOP chairwoman. She said of the crime in the shelters:

“I can’t stress enough that what’s happening in these migrant shelters is worse than anyone could ever imagine, and it’s been going on unabated for years. The Healey-Driscoll Administration has overseen a state-funded humanitarian crisis, funded entirely by taxpayers, and now they want even more money to sustain this broken system.”

Healy ordered inspections of the shelters after a Haitian man was arrested in March 2024 for allegedly raping a disabled minor at a hotel used to house immigrants; a Dominican man was arrested for possessing an AR-15 and thousands of dollars worth of drugs at a shelter. Carnevale said of the inspections:

“Inspections might uncover more horrors, but they don’t solve the root problem: Massachusetts’ overly generous Right-to-Shelter law, which has become a magnet for migrants and illegal immigrants worldwide.”

Boston and other individual cities aside, Gov. Healy is one of a handful of blue city mayors/governors who have vowed to fight Trump’s mass deportations once he is sworn into office. During a recent MSNBC interview, when asked if the Massachusetts State Police would cooperate with the Trump administration on deportation efforts, she said:

Absolutely not. There’s a lot of other ways that people are going to act, and need to act, for the sake of their states and their residents. Every tool in the toolbox has got to be used to protect our citizens, to protect our residents, and protect our states, and certainly to hold the line on democracy and the rule of law.

Democrats have spent the entirety of Joe Biden’s presidency lecturing us on how “humane” it is to let millions of people into the country who end up living in squalid conditions. Are they also okay with out-of-control crime taking place in illegal immigrant shelters, including the sexual assaults of young girls and women? Thankfully, maybe not in Massachusetts. In November, Healy announced the state would be phasing out the use of hotels, and moving illegal immigrants out of shelters into more reliable housing.

That might be a good start, Governor, but cooperating with ICE for the sake of actual Americans who live in your state might help, too.
