As RedState reported earlier, with his popularity cratering and after a tumultuous last few months and waves of calls for him to resign, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has done just that, indicating he will step aside after the country’s Liberal MPs choose his interim replacement ahead of the fall elections.

“I intend to resign as party leader, as prime minister, after the party selects its next leader through a robust, nationwide, competitive process,” Trudeau, who has been in office for ten years, said Monday in an announcement from the steps of Rideau Cottage in Ottawa, with only the background of the home – and not other party leaders – seen behind him.

Though many Canadians are no doubt celebrating the news of Trudeau’s resignation, Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre reminded them in a video statement reacting to the Prime Minister’s announcement that “nothing has changed”:

“Nothing has changed. Every Liberal MP and Leadership contender supported EVERYTHING Trudeau did for 9 years, and now they want to trick voters by swapping in another Liberal face to keep ripping off Canadians for another 4 years, just like Justin.

The only way to fix what Liberals broke is a carbon tax election to elect common sense Conservatives who will bring home Canada’s promise.”

Watch:

Poilievre has been making the case for years now that Trudeau needed to go, becoming a rock star of sorts in Canada in the process as he positioned himself for what he hopes to be his next role: the country’s Prime Minister.

Most recently, Poilievre sat down for an interview with author and political commentator Jordan Peterson where he said that, among other things, economic changes, border security, and crime crackdowns would be a big priority in a potential Poilievre administration.

Poilievre also noted that Canadians would have to keep putting the pressure on their elected leaders even after he is (presumably) elected because – as per the norm – there are powerful, connected people with vested interests who would very much like to keep things as they are:

“I’m going to have to put out a call to Canadians that they have to stay politically active, they can’t assume that by simply voting in an election that everything is going to — all the problems are going to reverse instantaneously.”

While who will become Canada’s next elected prime minister is uncertain, one thing that is for certain in my opinion is that with Donald Trump as president here and Poilievre being in a good position to win in the fall, North America has a real chance at becoming great again.

Just sayin’.
