During the Biden years, you were hard-pressed to find a media “fact check” of the POTUS at all. And even when you did, oftentimes they were lovingly sprinkled with generous qualifiers like “verbal stumble” and “gaffe” to let you know that even though Joe Biden was being untruthful, he was not a “serial liar” (even though he was and is, in fact, just that) and that the whopper he told wasn’t really a big deal in the scheme of things.
CNN’s purported “fact checker” Daniel Dale has been one of the worst offenders on this front, as we’ve documented previously, with one of the more notorious moments being this tweet in response to Donald Trump’s and Joe Biden’s October 2020 presidential debate:
Biden was again imperfect from a fact check perspective. He made at least a few false, misleading, or lacking-in-context claims. Trump was, as usual, a serial liar.
And we can’t forget this gem Dale posted during Biden’s CNN town hall in September of that same year:
Biden is implicitly fact checking Trump by…uttering many consecutive coherent sentences, which Trump has repeatedly said Biden cannot do.
Yeah. Dale actually said that.

Not surprisingly, now that President-Elect Trump appears to be the de facto president at this point even though Biden still has a few weeks to go, Dale is oh so conveniently back to “fact-checking” – not statements made by Biden, of course, but the ones being made by Trump:

Now, isn’t that just precious? I mean, the jokes write themselves at this point:

Hopefully someone who is more patient than me will do a count of how many fact checks we got from CNN over the last 4 years despite the myriad of obvious lies from Biden-Harris re Afghanistan, inflation, border, Hunter, J6, covid, Israel-Palestine, Biden’s Health… https://t.co/wW6uEHp7bN

In fairness, Biden has been laying pretty low since Trump’s Election Day victory, which hasn’t given Dale a ton to work with even if he was of the mindset that Biden needed some fact-checking.
But the fact of the matter is Dale, like his contemporaries at the Washington Post (cc: Glenn Kessler) and other media fact-checking arms, has never viewed Biden as a liar on par with what they say is Trump’s alleged penchant for being dishonest every time he speaks, and the reason why is that Biden has that magical “D” by his name.
I mean, think about it. This is something the WaPo itself declared in so many words on the day of Joe Biden’s inauguration, as reported by The Daily Caller at the time:
Trump’s departure also equals an end to having a false claims project for the current president, as The Post said it does “not have plans to launch a Biden database at this time.” Trump’s database began a month after he became president, The Post’s director of communications Shani George told the Caller.
“The database of Trump claims was started a month after Trump became president as a way to not overwhelm our fact-checking enterprise, where the core mission is to explain complex policy issues,” George said. “While we do not have plans to launch a Biden database at this time, we will continue to dig into the accuracy of statements by political figures of all party affiliations.”
Not only do the jokes write themselves but these guys tell on themselves – every single time.
