The comprehensive Movers Research study, which surveyed more than 1,600 Australians, revealed that relocating serves as a catalyst for big life changes, with many using the opportunity to start fresh routines and reassess their financial situation.
REA Group’s research showed that one in five movers either started a new hobby, obtained a new credit card, or purchased a new car during their relocation period.
Half of the homeowners surveyed took advantage of the move to renovate their properties.
Digital platforms play a crucial role in the modern moving journey, with two-thirds of movers beginning their research online before relocating.
The study found that nearly one-third of movers use realestate.com.au for styling inspiration and property research.
The financial aspect of moving emerged as a significant focus, with two-thirds of respondents conducting a comprehensive review of their finances during the moving process.
One-third of movers reported switching service providers for utilities such as internet, electricity, and home insurance.
REA Group National Sales Director, Rob Hudson, said the scale of the moving market in Australia is significant.
“Of the 11.9 million average monthly realestate.com.au visitors, we know over 2.3 million of these people are movers, and we have a deep understanding of what motivates them,” Mr Hudson said.
“12 per cent of Australian households relocate annually, and while moving house can be a highly emotional and stressful time, it’s also a window for transition, sparking change in many aspects of life.
“Our Movers Research underscores the dynamic nature of the moving market in Australia and highlights how mover behaviour has shifted in recent years.
“The findings provide valuable insight into the attitudes of movers and can help our customers effectively tailor their advertising strategies based on different stages of the moving journey.”
